I’m Shelby and I am here to help women just like me understand that health and fitness doesn’t have to feel like torture. I want to break through the constant diet and binge cycle that leaves us all feeling like failures.
I believe that getting healthy shouldn’t feel like punishment.
I want to show other women that health and happiness is more than what you weigh, what you eat and how much you exercise.
I feel I came out of the womb dealing with weight issues. Tad dramatic, but hey. But in all honesty, I cannot remember a time when I didn’t feel some sort of struggle with my body. I suffered from disordered eating most of my young adult life. And I’m not sure what came first- the weight struggle or the battle to correct what my ED did to my body.
On top of that, I was diagnosed with PCOS, an endocrine disorder affecting 1 in every 10 women, which makes it difficult to lose weight.
I spent most of my young adult life on the cycle of yo-yo dieting with every quick fix hot topic diet plan was out there. I would get pulled into the vicious cycle of extreme dieting that ALWAYS led to bingeing because those plans are not maintainable that led to guilt and starting the cycle all over again. I was literally living my life to lose weight, and felt like a failure when I didn’t.
Fast forward to now, and I am secure in saying I am a recovered diet addict. And that is exactly what it became- an addiction.
After being diagnosed with PCOS, and becoming educated in what that means for my body and life, I truly began to wake up to the fact that I was hurting my body with how I was treating it, I decided to get educated on HOW to fix it.
I discovered through my own journey that I had to do it for something other than the scale or the size of my pants. Letting go of the hold those numbers had on me was the most freeing thing I have ever done. Once I did, my goals shifted to not what I weighed or what size my pants were, but instead to how my body felt. I woke up judging my progress and success on how my body was functioning, vs what number popped up on the scale.
And I started feeling happier. And I started feeling healthier. I started learning how to fuel my body and make it work for me, instead of punishing myself with restricting and excess exercise.
I developed a love for exercise and nutrition but because it made me look better, although eventually it did, but because I felt pretty damn good and wanted to keep that up.
And I thought to myself, if this habitual quitter can figure this out, anyone can! I decided to pursue an education in fitness nutrition and weight loss (NASM) and here we are today.
Besides my health journey, some fun random things about me:
- *PCOS advocacy is my jam. I spend my random downtime trying to bring awareness to the most common endocrine disorder among women and be a voice for women to know living happy and healthy lives with PCOS is possible.
- *Currently in a pretty rough break up with Carbs. (I miss you, pizza. Call me.)
- *I seriously talk to strangers. All of them. On the internet. At the grocery store. In dark alleys. (Kidding, Momma Deb.)
- *I am the queen of laughing at my own jokes.
- *I cuss like a sailor and if you don’t like it that’s too damn bad.
- *Wine is life.
- *Lover of Big hair and dry shampoo and struggle buns.
- *My wardrobe is 98% Black. And I’m not the least bit sorry.
- *I believe in tough love and good vibes
- *Mama Bear to two beautiful, sticky handed souls
- *I’m actively trying to get my sh*t together every damn day.
